Animal Rituals or Trafficking: What’s Behind Strange Beach Finds in Cape Town?

An aardvark, a porcupine, and a dead chicken with its feet bound together have recently washed up on Cape Town beaches.

Recently, multiple non-aquatic animals have been washing up on the beaches of Cape Town, such as an aardvark, a porcupine, and a dead chicken. The Cape of Good Hope SPCA is investigating the incidents, and the two leading theories are animal rituals and animal trafficking.

The SPCA asks that any animal found on a public beach be reported to them or City of Cape Town law enforcement, and to take photos or videos of the animal without touching it.

What you can do:

  • Report any animal found on a public beach to the SPCA or City of Cape Town law enforcement.
  • Take photographs or a video of the animal for investigative purposes.
  • Refrain from touching the animal and keep children and pets away from injured or dead animals found on the beach.
