An elderly woman was raped in Nyanga on Saturday 27 June.
According to SAPS Western Cape the 70-year-old woman was raped at the Siyahlala informal settlement in Nyanga.
A 50-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Wynberg magistrates’ court today, 30 June 2020 on charges of rape.
The suspect, was hospitalised after community members attacked him on being alerted to the rape by the victim.
Initial reports suggest the suspect was in the home of the victim and her husband when the suspect sent the husband to run an errand. After the husband left the house, suspect raped the 70-year-old woman.
Today, the Stellenbosch University’s Anti-GBV Movement will be protesting outside Parliament in Cape Town against gender based violence.
The protests come in the wake of the recent spate of attacks on women across South Africa.
The movement issued a memorandum to government officials demanding a report detailing what the various government levels have done to combat GBV.
Among the demands in the memorandum was the issue of ensuring the sex offender’s list includes all sex crimes and that it be made public.
