Alcohol consumption on Cape beaches giving authorities headache

Over a 1 000 bottles of alcohol were confiscated at Muizenberg beach on Wednesday

The City of Cape Town is concerned about the rampant consumption of alcohol at several beaches despite numerous warnings to the public to refrain from drinking at the beach. At Strandfontein Pavillion a female officer was attacked by another female after the officer took away her alcohol.

The woman was arrested after the incident.

Over a 1 000 bottles of alcohol were confiscated at Muizenberg beach on Wednesday.

Richard Brosnan, City Safety and Security Director said most Cape beaches were filled with revellers after 8pm yesterday.

“If you’re coming to the beach, please no alcohol, make sure that you know where your children are, make sure that you swim where the lifeguards are and if you are going to drive on the roads, please don’t drink and drive. Our random breath test unit is out at different times and locations of the day and if you’re caught, you’ll spend the weekend in jail.”
