Alcohol ban: Some Cape Town taverns say they will continue selling alcohol

Tavern owners and illicit liquor traders in some of Cape Town’s townships say they will continue selling alcohol despite the 2-week ban on alcohol sales.

They said it is the most profitable time for them and that enforcing an alcohol ban does not stop people from drinking.

Equal Rights Forum, a recently formed movement from Nyanga has also called on Taverns to continue operating with or without the government’s consent.

While speaking to eNCA, Thulani Pike from Equal Rights Forum said the Liquor Industry should “defy the government” and continue trading to feed their families.

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a total ban on the sale of alcohol for the fourth time on Sunday 27 June 2021.

Ramaphosa said the ban would help to prevent much-needed hospital beds from being filled up by people with alcohol-related injuries.
