Striking taxi operators cause heavy congestion in Stellenbosch CBD

Taxi operators started protesting against municipal traffic officials for pulling over taxis with outstanding fines and warrants.

A strike by taxi operators has led to heavy traffic congestion in the Stellenbosch CBD.

Taxi operators started protesting against municipal traffic officials for pulling over taxis with outstanding fines and warrants.

Roads affected by the protest action include Dorp, Adam Tas, Merriman, Bird, Plein and Alexander Streets.

According to Municipality spokesperson Stuart Grobbelaar, the strike led to some road closures in parts of the Stellenbosch CBD.

“The situation is currently under control but we urge residents and visitors to avoid the area if possible, as traffic flow is being negatively affected,” Grobbelaar said.
