Kuilsriver pet shop under fire for keeping puppies in hamster cage

...the puppies were in the same hamster cage for over a week.

A pet store in Kuilsriver has been condemned on social media after a picture of eight puppies in the shop on display in a hamster cage went viral.

The photo shows eight pitbull cross-breeds cramped in a small cage, with a sign stating that each pup was for sale for R1200.

A twitter user who visited the store said the puppies were in the same hamster cage for over a week.

The user added that the pet shop had not been providing the puppies with adequate food and water.

Following the visit to the store the twitter user alerted the SPCA on the matter via the social media platform.

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) has since opened a case against the pet store.

Since being visited by the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and the SPCA, the pet store has returned the dogs to their original owner, and will no longer sell dogs or cats.
