A group of Primary and High School principles in the Western Cape have written an open letter to the South African Government calling for the closure of schools.
The open letter which has been shared on the Western Cape Teachers Forum was written by concerned principles from Steenberg High, Floreat Primary, Athlone High and Heathfield High.
“We, the under- mentioned concerned high school and primary school principals herewith make an urgent appeal to our honourable president and all members of cabinet. Our appeal is for Government to review its decision to reopen schools,” read part of the letter.
The principles said that in their view the decision to reopen schools on the 1st June was the wrong one.
Arguing that the timing is bad considering the decision to reopen schools during the winter season.
” The Corona virus thrives under cold conditions and will also augment and exacerbate the onset of the flu and tuberculosis.”
According to the principles, reported incidents of teacher and children suffering and deaths due to Covid 19 are rising.
Adding that teachers and learners are terrified of contracting the Corona virus- ” The anxiety around Covid-19 is palpable,” read the letter.
The principles have called for schools to be closed across the country, and called on principals everywhere to speak out against the early reopening of schools.
