Traffic officer shot dead in Kensington

The 49-year-old traffic officer was allegedly shot dead with his service pistol on his way to Maitland police station with the suspect.

A City of Cape Town traffic officer was shot and killed in Kensington, near Goodwood, this morning.

Police spokesperson Colonel Andre Traut, said prior to the shooting the officer had arrested a taxi driver over a traffic infringement on the corners of 5th Avenue and Voortrekker Road.

The 49-year-old traffic officer was allegedly shot dead with his service pistol on his way to Maitland police station with the suspect.

The suspcet subsequently fled the scene of the crime.

Western Cape police have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, circumstances surrounding the incident are being investigated.
