Cape Town fisherman bitten by shark after trying to free it from trawler nets

The 2.5 metre-long shark had been caught in his fishing nets and accidentally hauled on board by the fisherman.

A 46-year-old Cape Town fisherman was attacked by a shark on Tuesday,while attempting to release the shark from a net.

The 2.5 metre-long shark had been caught in his fishing nets and accidentally hauled on board by the fisherman.

The fisherman sustained shark bite lacerations to his Left forearm and Left upper arm.

The NSRI responded to the accident at fishing grounds, 30 nautical miles offshore of Port Elizabeth.

Following the successful release of the shark from the nets, the trawler sent out for assistance and headed back towards shore.

Rescuers met with the trawler and the fisherman was transferred onto the sea rescue craft and received medical treatment from the EMS rescue paramedic on board.

Once on shore he was transported to a hospital for further treatment.
