41 refugees deported after staging protest against xenophobia in Cape Town

Forty-one foreign nationals have been deported two years after staging a protest against xenophobia in Cape Town.

Hundreds had participated in a sit-in outside the UN Refugee Agency and the families then occupied the Central Methodist Church.

Following a court order, they were removed and relocated to a site in Bellville.

After the Covid-19 lockdown was announced, in April 2020 a police operation removed those living in the church to the site at Paint City, with the other group sent to Wingfield.

Currently 1,583 refugees and asylum seekers are living at the Paint City and Wingfield sites.

Minister of Home Affairs Aaron Motsoaledi said 390 had accepted local settlement so far.

Motsoaledi said offers of resettlement or repatriation would expire at the end of April.
