400 people show up for fake job advert in Cape Town

Over 400 job seekers in Cape Town were left disappointed after they fell victim to a job hoax on social media.

Lotus River Ward councillor Patricia van der Ross arrived at her office to find long lines of job-seekers waiting to sign up for a canal cleaning project under the the City of Cape Town.

A social media post, indicated that there were 200 jobs available and that those interested should bring certified copies of their IDs.

 

Van der Ross said she was contacted on Tuesday by residents who asked about the job advert and contacted an officicial who informed her that there was a project where 50 people fell out, but the workers would be sourced from the database.

Van der Ross said some of the job seekers had been standing in line since 5am.

The Ward councillor was able to assist them by helping them to register on the City’s database.
