Two Cape Town police officials attached to Maitland SAPS have been arrested on charges of kidnapping and defeating the administration of justice.
Police spokesperson, FC van Wyk, said a suspect arrested for housebreaking needed medical attention and was transported to Somerset Hospital for medical care.
The suspect however managed to escape from hospital.
After failing to track him down, the two officers then arrested another man from the street and booked him in at the police station to take on the identity of the escaped suspect.
The following day, when the suspect was processed, the detective realised that the person does not fit the description of the person who was originally arrested.
“The matter was referred to the anti-corruption unit for investigation. Upon the investigation, it was decided by the public prosecution to charge the members.”
The Magistrate at Cape Town Court authorised warrants of arrest for the members. They are due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates court on Monday.
